A modern hull gives the design a better starting point

Restarting on a modern battleship hull produces a better-balanced baseline, but the main battery, armour, machinery, range, and secondary guns soon consume the available margin.

Notes

The Queen Elizabeth concept restarts on a modern battleship hull after the first version is rejected. The new hull initially looks much more stable, so the main battery, armour scheme, machinery, range, and secondary battery are rebuilt around it. Once the secondary guns and protection are added, the ship again becomes badly overweight and develops severe pitch and fore-and-aft imbalance. A more suitable hull improves the baseline without removing the competition among armament, protection, speed, and stability.
