Escorts before extra missiles on a carrier

For a Queen Elizabeth-class group, more capable escorts offer greater value than adding a missile layer to the carrier if budgets force a choice.

Question

Should British carriers receive more missiles, or should money go to additional escorts?

Short answer

Extra escorts are the priority; carrier missiles are a fallback when the required escort force cannot be funded.

Notes

Sea Ceptor on the carrier would add a useful defensive layer, particularly while escort numbers remain low. If budgets force a choice, more escorts offer greater value because they protect the whole task group and perform missions beyond point defence. Type 31 frigates would stay close to the carrier and auxiliaries, while Type 26 frigates hunted submarines and contributed inner-layer air defence. Area-defence destroyers would cover the centre and forward edge of the formation. Carrier-mounted missiles remain a worthwhile fallback when the larger escort programme cannot be funded, but they do not replace the ships needed for a layered group.
