Why the Tiger Moth became the Queen Bee

The light, rugged, forgiving Tiger Moth matched naval aerial torpedoes in scale and gave remote-control development a cheap, maneuverable airframe.

Notes

The Tiger Moth was small, inexpensive, maneuverable, and easy to fly, characteristics that suited conversion to remote control. Its gross weight was only slightly above that of a Mark 15 aerial torpedo, while its empty weight was a few hundred pounds below the Mark XII torpedo used by British aircraft. The comparison shows how little shipboard space and lifting capacity the airframe demanded for an aircraft of useful range. Its rugged construction and forgiving handling also let it perform diving attacks and other hard maneuvers without risking a pilot.
