Why quantitative proof needs qualitative context

A smartphone example shows how technological capability can feed generational hubris and push geography, culture, and context aside.

Notes

Each generation tends to treat its inherited technological advantages as evidence that it is smarter than its predecessors. Recording a video on a smartphone does show a real gain in capability: earlier production needed a large camera crew and cameras on a light railway, while still earlier communication depended on spoken or written words. Those achievements build on the work of previous generations, but they do not prove greater wisdom. Historians therefore have to defend qualitative evidence, including geography, culture, and context, when figures alone make a proposed solution look conclusive. Quantitative evidence can show capability; it cannot establish that a policy or strategy suits the conditions in which people must apply it.
