Why E-boats did not strike the D-Day fleet

D-Day surface security reflected prior attrition as well as aggressive interception at the invasion area.

Question

Why did E-boats not attack the D-Day invasion fleet?

Short answer

German forces were recovering from earlier losses and pressure, and the craft that did approach were often driven off before they could attack effectively.

Notes

German small craft did mount some attacks during the invasion period, but Schnellboote were not the principal participants in these encounters. German forces were still recovering from earlier operations and clashes with Allied destroyers. When Schnellboote began to appear, British coastal forces often ambushed or turned them away before they reached useful firing positions. The absence of a mass attack therefore reflects both earlier attrition and the active barrier around the assault lanes.
