Why the Tribal class was not right for every navy

A powerful fighting ship can still be the wrong procurement choice when its specialization does not match a navy's fleet structure and missions.

Question

Was there any fleet that would not have wanted the Tribal-class destroyer?

Short answer

Yes. The Tribal fit British and Commonwealth requirements, but its gun-heavy specialization did not suit the U.S., German, or Italian destroyer systems as well as designs tailored to their own missions.

Notes

The U.S. Navy needed a different balance inside its developing general-purpose fleet escort. Germany was trying to make each destroyer cover many roles, making the Tribal too specialized for its concept. Italy needed larger and more balanced destroyers, but not necessarily a copy of the British ship. Italian industry could design heavy destroyer leaders comparable to French contre-torpilleurs when doctrine demanded them. A successful ship can therefore be a poor template for navies with different missions and fleet structures.
