Can Type 83 be considered a cruiser if it cannot engage surface ships?
Short answerType 83 is expected to be much larger and more heavily armed than Type 45, with extensive VLS capacity and future strike options.
NotesA future air-defence ship can still be called a cruiser if it lacks an anti-ship weapon, although Type 83 must first be separated from the current Type 45. The successor is expected to carry a large vertical-launch battery and weapons suited to emerging hypersonic threats and strike missions. At the projected displacement, the design would have the scale and growth margin associated with a modern cruiser regardless of its official label.
