Were Fairey Swordfish ever used for combat air patrols?
Short answerThey flew anti-submarine patrols and scored occasional air-to-air successes, but fighters normally handled combat air patrol.
NotesAnti-submarine patrols differed from the fighter combat-air-patrol role. Swordfish routinely contributed to the former, while purpose-built fighters normally protected the fleet from aircraft. The biplane's low speed and tight turning could sometimes make a fast attacker overshoot and give its crew an unexpected firing opportunity. Its occasional air-to-air victories came from those unusual tactical circumstances. They did not make the Swordfish a normal substitute for fighter cover.
