Would the fleet use smoke-screen aircraft?

Smoke-laying dive bombers were an emergency defensive option, but strike aircraft were more valuable attacking the Japanese carriers.

Question

Would the fleet use the smoke-screen dive bombers Halsey employed on 7 December?

Short answer

Possibly as a last resort, but the aircraft would more likely be committed to a strike against the Japanese carriers.

Notes

Aircraft could deploy smoke when the fleet had no better defensive option, making it a plausible emergency measure. In this scenario, however, the carriers need their available aircraft to locate and hit Kido Butai. Assigning dive bombers to obscure the battle line would reduce the force available for the counterstrike and might only delay the attackers. Offensive use would therefore take priority unless the fleet had exhausted more valuable ways to defend itself.
