Could surplus capital-ship turrets arm new cruisers?

Surplus Lexington mountings might help arm a large interwar cruiser, while Nelson's heavier turrets were a poorer fit.

Question

Could turrets removed from the Lexingtons or Nelsons be reused to create large cruisers quickly in the 1930s?

Short answer

Possibly, especially with the Lexington mountings, but Nelson's heavy early-generation turrets were poorly matched to a cruiser and newer designs would usually be preferable.

Notes

Technical availability does not make a surplus turret the best design choice. Lexington's mountings might be reusable because an available turret avoids building a new one from scratch. Nelson's early-generation mountings, however, were heavier and more heavily armored than a cruiser installation needed. By the 1930s, newer purpose-built cruiser turrets would usually offer a cleaner balance of weight, protection, and machinery.
