Did any of these large destroyers actually take on smaller destroyers or cruisers?
Short answerNot the French ships in the intended doctrinal contest, but Royal Navy large destroyers repeatedly fought cruisers and destroyers, including the Tribal-class attack at Cape Bon.
NotesA design's intended opponent has to be separated from the combat history available to test it. French large destroyers did not receive the fleet action against Italy for which much of their doctrine had developed. British large destroyers, by contrast, repeatedly engaged heavier surface opposition. At Cape Bon, a force including two Tribals maneuvered between Italian ships and the Italian coast before attacking. Combat records from one navy cannot automatically validate another navy's superficially similar design.
