How the L70 destroyer proposal led toward the Daring class

Henderson traded his eighteen-ship L70 destroyer proposal for carrier orders; the design later returned, updated, as the Daring class.

Question

What if Britain built a larger Tribal-type destroyer with the Daring class's 4.5-inch armament?

Short answer

Henderson's L70 proposal already followed that approach; completing it earlier could have produced Daring-like ships before the war at the expense of carrier orders.

Notes

Henderson wanted to follow the Tribals with eighteen larger L70 destroyers armed with 4.5-inch guns. He gave up that order in a procurement compromise that allowed him to secure the aircraft carriers he wanted. In this account, the design returned as the basis of the Daring class, updated for the technology available in 1948. Building it earlier could therefore have put Daring-like destroyers into service eleven years sooner. The tradeoff was carrier construction, with the Implacables identified as a likely program to face delay.
