Would ships in a larger Indian Navy have defected to the Axis during the Second World War?
Short answerProbably not. The Indian armed forces and the Royal Indian Navy remained overwhelmingly loyal during the war.
NotesMost Indian personnel who joined Axis-backed formations had first become prisoners and then faced a very different set of choices from crews serving normally in the Royal Indian Navy. The Indian Army remained overwhelmingly loyal when judged against its enormous wartime size, and the navy also served loyally through the conflict. Those records provide no sound basis for assuming that a larger prewar Indian fleet would automatically have defected to the Axis. Defections by captured personnel should therefore be distinguished from the conduct of the much larger Indian armed forces.
