Did every imperial station need a battlecruiser?

Enemy basing and the available cruiser force determine where an expensive battlecruiser is needed.

Question

Would stationing battlecruisers throughout the Empire let Britain destroy German cruisers quickly and with fewer losses?

Short answer

Their deployment should follow the actual German threat, with HMAS Australia covering the East Asian squadron and ordinary cruisers handling less demanding stations.

Notes

The German battlecruiser concentration made the North Sea the principal place to counter that force. Overseas, HMAS Australia already threatened the German East Asian squadron and helped drive its departure. Stations without a comparable German squadron did not automatically need a British battlecruiser. Town-class cruisers could deal with merchant shipping, while modern British armoured cruisers also needed freedom to carry out their intended duties. Sending the heaviest available ship to every station would use expensive fighting power where a smaller cruiser could do the work.
