The Hunt for Red October illustrates command structure

Does The Hunt for Red October also work as a teaching example?

Yes, mainly the film, because it illustrates command structure more clearly than many other movies.

The Hunt for Red October is also useful in teaching, primarily in its film version. Sean Connery's portrayal offers a clear illustration of how a commander operates within a hierarchy. Its classroom value is organizational rather than the complete-war strategic exercise supplied by Red Storm Rising. The film makes command relationships easier to see than many other naval movies.
