Would Nimitz have used the Standard-type battleships around Guadalcanal if six Cimarron-class oilers had been available instead of two?
Short answerProbably yes; adequate oilers would make the ships deployable, add operational options, and provide heavily armed, well-protected units near the carrier force.
NotesExtra oilers would make taking the battleships forward much more plausible. Fuel support determines whether a slow, thirsty capital ship can remain useful in a distant and fast-moving campaign. Once supplied, the Standards could add anti-aircraft fire, heavy guns, and protected hulls that complicated Japanese targeting of the carriers. They could also absorb fire otherwise aimed at more operationally valuable units. The counterfactual therefore turns on logistics first and tactical employment second.
