Why did battleship designers not return to five main-battery turrets?
Short answerWeight efficiency favored fewer multi-gun turrets because they reduced duplicated machinery, armor, and structural support.
NotesEvery turret duplicates barbettes, handling machinery, protection, and supporting structure. Five-turret layouts had been common in earlier British dreadnoughts, but larger guns made duplicated mountings increasingly costly. A quadruple turret adds mechanism weight and complexity of its own. It can still save substantial cumulative weight compared with two twin turrets carrying the same four guns, so later battleships favored fewer, larger mountings.
