What happened to Packard engines from Pacific PT boats

Many engines were removed or salvaged, but scattered wreck sites could still conceal machinery where boats were abandoned and buried by sand.

Question

Were Packard engines removed from beached PT boats, or might some still remain in the Pacific?

Short answer

Most accessible engines were probably removed, but remote wrecks buried in sand could conceivably retain machinery.

Notes

Most Packard V-12 engines were removed before surplus PT boats were burned, but the panel leaves open the possibility that a few were missed. Remote Pacific beaches received uneven salvage attention after the war. Exposure and corrosion would destroy many remains, while machinery buried high in sand might survive in unexpectedly recognizable condition. Any recovered engine would still be a formidable machining and restoration challenge rather than a ready-to-run powerplant.
