Protector and the limits of an off-the-shelf polar ship

The current Protector is a capable converted research icebreaker, but limited aviation facilities expose an off-the-shelf procurement tradeoff.

Notes

The current HMS Protector entered service after beginning life as the Norwegian polar vessel Polarbjørn. She performs extensive research, support, and patrol work with light armament and a helicopter deck. Her conversion illustrates the attraction and limitation of buying an existing commercial design: acquisition can deliver a capable hull quickly, but conversion to exact naval requirements may be costly or incomplete. For British polar operations, the ability to embark, maintain, and support helicopters would add substantial reach.
