The attacking ship drives through the middle of the convoy screen toward the merchants. Defending cruisers charge outward and leave an opening through which the raider can reach the cargo ships. Escorts must protect that route into the convoy instead of pursuing so far that they expose the vessels under their care. The surface raider still has to escape without taking prohibitive damage once the attack is complete.
