Where second-class protected cruisers fit

The Mersey class introduces an affordable protected-cruiser branch that led toward later light- and heavy-cruiser development.

Notes

Second-class protected cruisers sat between cheap unprotected vessels and much more expensive armored cruisers. Their limited protection gave them a chance of surviving damage without imposing the cost of a heavily armored ship. The first-class protected cruiser led toward the large light cruiser, while the second-class type led toward the ordinary light cruiser. In this account, later heavy cruisers also descend through the protected-cruiser line rather than directly from battlecruisers. Hood, Renown, and Repulse represent the small surviving battlecruiser branch, while the adapted Kongō class had moved closer to fast battleships. The Alaska class illustrates how later cruiser and fast-battleship labels could remain disputed. This genealogy places the inexpensive Mersey class in the main cruiser family that fought the Second World War.
