Question

Was the proposed larger US destroyer gun worthwhile for a Fletcher?

Short answer

It would offer more range, but its added weight and complexity are judged insufficiently rewarding for a destroyer.

Notes

The proposed larger gun, described as 137 mm, could give an American destroyer greater range. Its extra weight and complexity are judged too costly for the additional capability. Retaining the five-inch gun is the preferred choice for a Fletcher in this assessment.
