Project B tested a sequence of submarines, a destroyer, a cruiser, and a battleship

The exercise was a graduated combined-service series involving German reparation ships, destroyer gunfire, and a dummy-bomb search for the battleship Iowa.

Notes

Ostfriesland was only the final and most famous part of Project B. The schedule began with aircraft attacks on the submarine U-117, followed by several submarines assigned to Destroyer Division 36 for gunfire sinking. Aircraft then had to search for the battleship Iowa and attack it with dummy bombs, adding a target-location problem absent from the later stationary attacks. The German destroyer G-102 and cruiser Frankfurt preceded the battleship trial. This graduated sequence mixed aircraft, destroyers, different ship types, and several weapon conditions. The Navy therefore sought comparative technical evidence across the series instead of a single theatrical verdict on battleships.
