Chapter ยท 3:35-6:24

Procuring military capability for peace

Procurement for peace begins with conventional deterrence and conflict management: how states try to prevent war and keep crises under control.

Notes

War studies connects military procurement to the problem of preventing war. Conventional deterrence and conflict management ask how states keep disputes from ending in armed conflict. The run-up to World War I provides a historical example of how a crisis can escape control. Procurement enters the argument because governments choose military assets for the conditions in which deterrence and conflict management must work, as well as for combat.
