Philip's naval career took him through Ramillies, Kent, Shropshire, Valiant, Wallace, Whelp, Chequers, and Magpie. His promotions followed experience in the Indian Ocean, at Cape Matapan, on East Coast convoys, off Sicily, and with the British Pacific Fleet. Wartime expansion accelerated a young officer from supervised large-ship duties to acting first lieutenant and then commissioning first lieutenant of a new destroyer. Postwar instructor work, staff training, flotilla-leader responsibility, and command of Magpie formed a conventional professional progression with real responsibility. Marriage and the accession eventually redirected that career into supporting the Queen.
