The prewar ships were distinctive French designs suited to the navy's doctrine. Their direct-drive Parsons turbines supported 30 knots and a range of 1,400 nautical miles at 14 knots. A crew of 181 handled two 100 mm guns, four 65 mm guns, and two twin 450 mm torpedo mountings. Two ships were built between 1913 and 1915 and launched in May and July 1915. The third vessel received more efficient geared turbines and eventually became a separate design, but remained unfinished until well after World War I.
