Presence ships and the appearance of power

Tribal-class destroyers show why a leading navy needs ships that can project the image and political weight of a cruiser far from home.

Notes

A globally engaged navy needs numerous presence ships alongside its major combatants. The Tribal-class example shows how silhouette, scale, and perceived status can matter in a distant crisis. A destroyer such as HMCS Haida could look cruiser-like at a distance and signal that a stronger fleet stood behind it. Under the treaty system, the visual contrast was between a cruiser of up to roughly 10,000 tons and a destroyer of about 1,800 tons. Visible naval presence can deter and manage conflict before battle begins.
