Rope, current, and animal-powered paddle craft

Rope-hauling and ox-powered examples demonstrate the long prehistory and military potential of paddle propulsion.

Notes

One early system paid out a rope downstream, then used the river current acting on its wheels to wind the craft back upstream. Chinese and Roman examples also coupled paddles to animal or human power. These cases suggest that paddles may have served trade or military movement for centuries before steam engines appeared. Steam power forms one chapter in a much longer history of mechanically driven water transport.
