A group composed entirely of current PPAs would have different strengths from a carrier or amphibious task group supported by frigates and air-warfare ships. Adding PPAs to that larger formation increases its useful capacity. Active and passive towed sonar give the design substantial anti-submarine capability despite its emphasis on patrol. Mediterranean operations also reward the ability to move quickly between places where a ship needs to be visible. Helicopters and boats extend that presence beyond the hull itself. Patrol deployments to the Indian Ocean and Japan illustrate its reach beyond home waters.
