Power margin must cover climate and shortfalls

Future destroyers need electrical and cooling reserve for growth, imperfect efficiency, and the climates in which each navy actually operates.

Notes

The Type 45 example introduces two reasons for leaving reserve in a future ship's power generation. Electrical demand can increase, and installed equipment can operate less efficiently than expected. Systems in cold conditions need heating, while equipment in hotter regions needs additional cooling. Regular operations in the North and South Atlantic combined with occasional Gulf deployments illustrate a wide temperature range. High humidity around Japan supplies another operating condition. These differences explain why the proposal combines shared systems development with national responsibility for the ship that houses them.
