Type 45 power problems as a resilience lesson

The Type 45's power-generation arrangement illustrates the cost of designing around perfect operation instead of graceful degradation.

Notes

The Type 45 destroyer's power problems show how redundancy choices affect operational resilience. A third power pack would have increased size and excess capacity, but it could also have allowed two surviving units to cover one failure. The two-pack arrangement instead depended on components behaving as predicted under ideal design assumptions. Retrofitting larger diesel generators demonstrates the later cost of resilience that was not built into the original arrangement.
