The A class provided a practical basis for postwar Commonwealth diesel submarines. Modernization kept its existing systems relevant instead of trying to remake the basic boat. Those upgrades enabled more advanced torpedoes, including weapons intended specifically for submarine-versus-submarine combat. Venturer's attack on U-864 helped demonstrate the requirement and encouraged navies to seek a more dependable answer than an improvised four-torpedo firing solution.
