Why Nelson and Rodney were the best postwar retention candidates

The remaining hull life that made the Nelson class preferable to older Royal Navy capital ships after 1945.

Question

Which one or two pre-1930 Royal Navy capital ships should have been retained after 1945?

Short answer

Nelson and Rodney, with Nelson the easier candidate because Rodney was more worn out.

Notes

Renown is the personal favorite, but Nelson and Rodney are the rational survivors. They were the youngest pre-1930 capital ships, leaving more hull life to justify the machinery replacement any retained ship would require. Rodney's machinery was especially worn, but every candidate needed expensive renewal. Remaining structural life therefore mattered more than personal preference.
