Building improved R-class ships after Jutland

A postwar construction answer explains why more hulls do not automatically represent progress when recent battle evidence has changed the design problem.

Question

What if Britain began six improved, faster R-class battleships before the end of the war?

Short answer

They would mostly replace older 13.5-inch ships in treaty calculations, but building a pre-Jutland design after 1918 would waste the Royal Navy's rich damage evidence and newer design studies.

Notes

The ships would give Britain more capital tonnage to trade away at Washington, probably at the expense of older 13.5-inch battleships. Their larger weakness is intellectual: Jutland produced extensive damage data that informed Admiral, G3, N3, Nelson, and later British designs. Repeating an R-class basis would lock scarce postwar construction into an already dated solution.
