Why the second Monarch left service after only eleven years

Newer ships and reduced demand for fleet numbers shortened Monarch's career, while competition in the quality of warship designs continued.

Notes

Monarch entered service in 1912 and left it in 1923, a much shorter career than that of her 1868 namesake. The First World War building programme left a supply of newer capital ships and reduced the need to retain the same depth of older hulls. Britain was no longer racing another navy ship for ship on the same basis. Competition over the quality of individual designs had existed before the war and continued afterwards. That strategic and material context helps explain the short service life of a ship otherwise judged sound.
