Why did postwar navies narrow their amphibious fleets around LPD, LSD, and LST types?
Short answerReduced fleet size and smaller expected landings rewarded multifunctional ships that retained the widest range of lift and distribution capabilities.
NotesMass wartime landings justified many specialized ship types, but brigade- or division-scale postwar operations did not. A dock ship could carry troops and dispatch several substantial landing craft to separate objectives, preserving broad capability in fewer hulls. Operation Claymore illustrates the value of distributing troops among several large landing craft before helicopter lift. The same logic explains the later concentration on LSDs, LPDs, and LSTs. Selected amphibious facilities aboard River-class offshore patrol vessels or Type 31 frigates could still improve presence and patrol missions.
