Reserve recall and Royal Navy rearmament in 1951

A 1951 readiness programme recalls reservists, takes over auxiliary tankers, and accelerates anti-submarine and minesweeping work as Cold War and Korean pressures rise.

Notes

The reading opens with British promises to strengthen defence after the North Atlantic Council meeting of December 1950. Plans called for 6,000 Royal Fleet Reserve ratings and about 600 officers from the emergency list and Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve to serve for eighteen months. Two tankers being built for Poland were taken over as RFA Surf Patrol and RFA Surf Pioneer, following an earlier tanker seizure at Hong Kong. The government also accelerated new construction and conversions against submarine and mine threats while preparing more reserve ships for service. The episode shows how mobilisation connected personnel, auxiliary shipping, industrial work, and readiness.
