Post-Falklands carrier and amphibious priorities

The Falklands strengthened the case for British carriers, while northern-flank reinforcement and disaster relief support investment in amphibious ships.

Notes

Since the Falklands War, a viable British carrier capability has been treated as a continuing requirement. Alongside the strategic deterrent, that commitment has sustained much Royal Navy construction. Amphibious forces offer another useful destination for increased funding, especially for reinforcements on NATO's northern flank and in the Baltic with Finland as an ally. An LHD can also support disaster relief, which helps make the political case for amphibious ships. Australia's domestic use of such vessels provides an example.
