Why capturing a port still requires sea lift

Airborne forces can raid or reinforce, but taking and sustaining a defended port demands heavy equipment and supply capacity that normally must arrive by sea.

Notes

The discussion separates the value of airborne movement from the mass required for a major amphibious objective. Troops can be delivered or reinforced by air for raids, covert operations, or part of an invasion. A defended port, however, calls for heavy equipment and continuing sustainment on a scale aircraft cannot usually provide. Naval control and sea lift are therefore prerequisites for turning a landing into a durable operational success.
