Should replaced warships be retained in reserve instead of sold, and for how long?
Short answerSelected ships would form a rolling reserve, with later frigates replacing earlier ones as more ships became available.
NotesThe proposal would retain selected Type 23 frigates, Albion, and Bulwark in reserve. It would also have kept the Bay-class ship sold to Australia. Around six of the best Type 23s would form the initial reserve, with the first six Type 31s eventually replacing them as enough newer ships became available. No fixed retention period is offered; the intended arrangement is a rolling replacement cycle. A later reply adds that retaining ships would still require willingness to spend money and make use of reservists.
