Operating waters shape the hull

A ship suited to the Mediterranean may be a poor choice for the South Atlantic, Arctic, or a dispersed maritime state.

Notes

Sea state, weather, temperature, territorial dispersion, and access to resources are design inputs rather than afterthoughts. Arctic insulation, tropical cooling, hull strength, and range all consume space and money. The contrast between an Italian patrol design and the demands of Falklands or Arctic service illustrates why copying another navy's hull can fail even when that hull is good in its intended environment. An exclusive economic zone also requires ships capable of enforcing authority, rather than merely detecting a violation from the air or space.
