Vian was repeatedly selected when the Royal Navy faced a difficult operational problem. He commanded the 4th Destroyer Flotilla from Afridi, led Cossack during the Altmark incident, and later moved through cruiser and carrier formations. His assignments included Arctic convoy reconnaissance, Operation Torch, parts of D-Day, the 1st Aircraft Carrier Squadron, and the British Pacific Fleet before the Home Fleet. This breadth made an aggressive response more likely whenever he faced a difficult operation. Destroyer experience prepared him for increasingly complex joint and fleet command.
