Philip Vian's memoir Action This Day follows a Royal Navy career that moved from destroyer-flotilla command to vice-admiral rank during the Second World War. After the war, he served as Fifth Sea Lord with responsibility for naval aviation. The book includes a photograph of the memorial to the Altmark incident and an account of Operation Vigorous that mixes humour with a serious story.
