Personal papers fill gaps in the official archive

Photographs, catalog references, and officers' private files show why reconstructing interwar aviation policy requires comparing official records with evidence preserved elsewhere.

Notes

Photographs of Sopwith Camels operating from carriers in 1924 complicate firm service dates derived from unit records. Some photographs may show testing or secondary use, so they establish activity without fixing exact dates for carrier service. A National Archives reference identifies Madden's 1919 requirements paper in the public record. His accompanying letter sought most of the ships before his successor completed a command term. That letter survives in personal papers even though the corresponding Admiralty material appears absent from the official series. Comparing official records, private papers, and photographs therefore helps establish both what was proposed and how urgently it was wanted.
