The Perry's hardware followed its escort missions. LM2500 gas turbines provided propulsion, while hull sonar, a towed array, torpedo tubes and LAMPS helicopters supported anti-submarine work. LAMPS stands for Light Airborne Multi-Purpose System. The single-arm Mark 13 launcher drew on a 40-missile magazine for SM-1MR and Harpoon. A 76 mm gun and 20 mm Phalanx supplied additional firepower. Earlier ships were oriented more toward merchant convoys, amphibious groups and logistics ships. Later ships gained Seahawk-capable aviation facilities that strengthened carrier-group support.
