A larger Pensacola remains a scout before a cruiser fighter

Extra treaty displacement could improve Pensacola, but its reconnaissance mission would still shape the design more than cruiser combat.

Question

Would a 12,000-ton, 9.2-inch cruiser ceiling make the Pensacola class a good ship?

Short answer

It could produce a different and better ship, but if the design remained reconnaissance-focused it would be a strong scout rather than an ideal cruiser fighter.

Notes

Additional displacement gives designers more room for protection, structure, fuel, or armament. Mission remains decisive, however, because a cruiser optimized to find and report the enemy makes different compromises from one expected to defeat peer cruisers. The alternate ceiling does not automatically change American scouting doctrine. Pensacola could therefore improve substantially without becoming a balanced close-combat cruiser.
