The many design paths behind the Pensacola class

Early studies show the US Navy considering twelve-gun cruisers, aircraft hangars, and several competing layouts before settling on Pensacola.

Notes

Early design work around 1922 produced several plausible routes to the Pensacola class. Alternatives included twelve 8-inch guns and an aft aircraft hangar beneath a superfiring turret. The proposals leave the cruiser's intended role unresolved: scout for the fleet, support the battle line, or inherit some battlecruiser functions. They also show aviation, gun power, and reconnaissance competing for priority before the final layout emerged.
