Chapter · 18:19-28:41

Four Town-class survivors at Pembroke

The counterfactual starts by choosing Chatham, Southampton, Birmingham, and Lowestoft as four old Town-class cruisers plausibly left together at Pembroke.

Notes

The scenario begins with disposal records rather than a generic pool of old cruisers. Pembroke provides four candidates in one place, while earlier scrapping at other Welsh or English yards makes other Town-class hulls less plausible. Chatham and Southampton were sold in 1926, while Birmingham and Lowestoft followed in 1931. The essential counterfactual step is prolonged storage by a breaker with spare river space. Three ships would also need replacement names because newer Royal Navy vessels had reused Birmingham, Southampton, and Lowestoft. Dockyards, commercial incentives, naming practice, and mundane disposal records all constrain this naval alternate history.
