Pembroke Dockyard and hidden naval capacity

HMS Duke of Edinburgh's construction at Pembroke reveals how widely the Royal Navy's state-owned shipbuilding capacity extended beyond famous yards.

Notes

Pembroke Dockyard's contribution is easily obscured by better-known names such as Portsmouth. Pembroke built HMS Duke of Edinburgh and many other Royal Navy ships as part of a geographically broad public industrial network. Privately owned yards provided additional capacity beyond this state infrastructure. Together, those resources help explain how the pre-1914 Royal Navy could sustain a large building programme when Parliament supplied the money.
