PB2Y Coronado: a flying-boat bomber

With a roughly 12,000-pound bomb load and a 930-nautical-mile range, the PB2Y Coronado emphasized striking power over long-range patrol.

Notes

The PB2Y Coronado was a large U.S. flying-boat bomber, a different proposition from the patrol-focused Catalina. It could carry roughly 12,000 pounds of bombs and had several heavy machine-gun positions, giving it much greater striking power than the Seaford. The price was range: about 930 nautical miles, compared with 2,700 for the Seaford. That trade suited a U.S. Navy with many available bases and less need to maximize endurance in every flying boat. The RAF also operated the type, and 217 were built.
